Position Trading Examples and Case Studies

Posted on 2023-05-07

Position trading is a trading style that involves holding positions for an extended period, typically weeks to months. It's a popular approach among traders who aim to capture larger market moves and ride significant trends.

Here are some examples of position trading and their outcomes:

Apple Inc. (AAPL) - In 2019, Apple experienced a significant drop in stock price, which lasted for several months. However, the company’s financials were strong, and many analysts believed that it was only a matter of time before the stock would recover. A position trader who bought Apple stock during the dip and held it for several months would have been able to profit significantly when the stock price eventually rebounded.

Gold - Gold is a popular commodity among position traders due to its tendency to trend for long periods. For instance, between 2015 and 2020, gold was in an uptrend, increasing from around $1,050 per ounce to over $2,000 per ounce. A position trader who bought gold during the early stages of the uptrend and held it for several years would have been able to profit significantly.

EUR/USD - The EUR/USD currency pair is one of the most popular pairs among position traders. In 2017, the pair was in an uptrend, rising from around 1.05 to around 1.20. A position trader who bought the pair during the early stages of the uptrend and held it for several months would have been able to profit significantly.

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) - Amazon is a company that has experienced significant growth over the years, making it a popular stock among position traders. For instance, between 2016 and 2021, Amazon's stock price increased from around $550 per share to over $3,000 per share. A position trader who bought Amazon stock during the early stages of the uptrend and held it for several years would have been able to profit significantly.

In all of these examples, position traders benefited from holding their positions for an extended period, allowing them to ride the significant market trends. However, it's important to note that position trading requires a lot of patience and discipline, as it can take several weeks or months for a trade to play out.
